Portraits of Christ

Good Friday - the day Jesus died

"...Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."
(Matthew 16:21).

If you think of sin but lightly
Nor suppose the evil great,
Here you see its nature rightly,
Here its guilt may estimate,
Mark the sacrifice appointed;
See who bears the awful load -
'Tis the Word, the Lord's Anointed,
Son of Man and Son of God.
      Christian Worship - Hymn 127 v3

"You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
(Romans 5:6-8).

Here we have a firm foundation,
Here the refuge of the lost;
Christ's the rock of our salvation,
His the name of which we boast,
Lamb of God, for sinners wounded,
Sacrifice to cancel guilt -
None shall ever be confounded
Who on him their hope have built.
         Christian Worship - Hymn 127 v4

Come and Worship the One who died for you
